How many of us know that Muslim communities also exist in Nepal and genuinely care about their fate? Yet, this Asian country is home to more than one and a half million believers, who bear the light of Islām amid the jāhiliyyah that still grips the overwhelming majority of the population, held captive by Hindu polytheism and Buddhism’s false promises of liberation.
Therefore, may Allāhﷻ bless the brother who brought to the blog’s attention the recent events in Sunsari District, where a series of attacks were unleashed against Muslim homes, businesses, and mosques, accompanied by acts of vandalism and arson.
Hindutva’s Islamophobia has crossed the borders of India to strike with all its brutality our Nepali brothers and sisters, victims of the terrorism perpetrated by those gangs of barbarians serving the tyrant Modi.
The presence of Islām in Nepal is the result of trade and migration, which over the centuries have contributed to spreading the Word of the Most High across the country through peaceful daʿwah efforts. Muslim communities are present in the famous Kathmandu Valley, but are concentrated primarily in the Terai, the lowland belt along the southern border with India, where Sunsari is located.
We know that “the believers are but brothers” (sūrat al-Hujurāt, 49:10), and we should not forget what Prophet Muhammadﷺ told us: “You see the believers in their mutual mercy, love, and compassion as one body: when one part of it suffers, the rest of the body responds to it with sleeplessness and fever” (sahīh al-Bukhārī, 6011).
Nepali Muslims are flesh of our flesh. But how deeply do we feel the suffering they are going through? How deeply do we empathize with them, even when their predicament does not make the headlines? And what are we doing, concretely, to show them our closeness and solidarity in the face of persecution?
If we have fallen short, let us begin to make up for it from this very moment: let us learn more about our brothers and sisters in Nepal, speak about their situation, remember them in our adʿiyah, and make others aware of their plight. Let us build a truly united Ummah, beyond every border!
