The following reflections are born from a recent exchange with a brother who wrote to us on the blog Swordless Jihād. We are grateful to him for having raised important questions, which have made us understand how some issues still need to be addressed by our Ummah. We know that no word can truly soothe the tragedy and pain of our brothers and sisters in Palestine. However, we believe it is our duty, as editors of Swordless Jihād, to share what we think.
The October 7 attack was carried out with the awareness that death and destruction would have certainly hit the defenseless Palestinian population of the Gaza Strip by Israhell and Satanyahu. A sought-after outcome, as “proudly” admitted by the leader of Hamas, Yahya Sinwar.
We understand very well that suffering and injustices such as those inflicted on the Palestinians for decades, make one sink into desperation and blind rage, so much so as to induce the victims to think of carrying out extreme reactions against anyone who is part of the enemy people. Moreover, the drama that continues to disrupt the life our brothers and sisters in Palestine, we sincerely feel it as ours both as Muslims and as human beings, even if we do not experience it firsthand.
However, here at Swordless Jihād we cannot endorse cold-mindedly planned actions such as those of October 7, which have had only counterproductive effects, including the killing of innocent civilians, and have provoked, as a response, the extermination of the defenseless Palestinian population itself. Let us think carefully, what has the result of that reckless attack been to date? Has the immense tragedy resulted from it alleviated the suffering of our Palestinian brothers and sisters or has it put them in a worse situation?
For this reason, we ask ourselves: would Prophet Muḥammad saw, whose extraordinary wisdom and intelligence Muslims must refer to even for military affairs, have launched such an attack, knowing for sure what the consequences would have been? Allāh a’alam and may He forgive us if we are wrong, but we say no, His Messenger would have not done it. Therefore, those in front of us are not heroes, much less “martyrs”, but just “misguided of jihad” who exploit Islām, bringing about only further death, destruction, and suffering to the Palestinians, while losing their own lives, as happened to Isma’il Haniyeh. And now the massacre is spreading to the whole of Lebanon.
Supporting Palestine and the Palestinian cause against Zionism and the “Americanization of the Middle East”, as Muslims does not mean having to “root” for Khomeini’s Iran, Hezbollah, the Houthis, or even for Hamas, although for the time being there are no “rightly guided” alternatives in sight, taking for granted the passivity (if not connivance) of the Arab-Muslim “rulers”. The bottom has been reached, but we continue to dig, at the cost of tens of thousands of innocent lives.
Now that everything is compromised, regaining control of the situation for Palestine will unfortunately require a very long time, perhaps longer than our mind can imagine. But without a change of approach, without a new beginning, will Allāh swt ever grant victory?
